XML Sitemap syntax checker

Check XML syntax and basic URL entry structure in an XML sitemap.

Input and settings

How to use it

Perform a lightweight XML syntax check on pasted sitemap text and count url and loc elements. It is a structural preflight, not a full sitemap-protocol validator.

  1. Paste XML sitemap text.
  2. Select Check.
  3. Confirm XML syntax and compare the reported url and loc counts.
Syntax check
Checks whether the pasted XML is readable
Syntax error
Stops and reports malformed XML
Counts
url elements and loc elements
Scope
Does not verify live URLs, limits or sitemap semantics

One url with one loc reports url: 1 and loc: 1

<url><loc>https://example.com/</loc></url> inside a valid urlset is counted as one url element and one loc element.

“XML syntax OK” only means the browser could parse the XML. The checker does not confirm that every loc is an absolute URL, that the namespace is correct, or that search engines will accept the sitemap.

Basic XML syntax is checked first

Missing closing tags, broken quotes and similar XML syntax errors are reported before the tool counts url and loc elements.

The counts are a quick consistency signal

A large difference between url and loc counts can reveal obviously incomplete entries, but equal counts still do not prove every sitemap rule is satisfied.

Protocol limits are not checked

The tool does not enforce sitemap URL-count, file-size, compression, lastmod format or sitemap-index rules.

It does not crawl any listed URL

Availability, redirects, canonical status and HTTP responses remain unknown. Use the checker as local text preflight before deeper site-level validation.
