What to know before using it

XML sitemaps tell search engines which canonical URLs you want discovered. Keep them focused on indexable canonical pages instead of errors, redirects and duplicates.

Common failure points

  • Keep sitemap URLs consistent with canonical tags.
  • Do not update lastmod when content has not changed.
  • Large sites can use multiple sitemaps with a sitemap index.

Practical example

After publishing a guide, add its canonical URL to the sitemap and monitor discovery in Search Console.
