Convert image to grayscale

Convert an image to grayscale and save it as PNG, JPEG, or WebP.

Input and settings

How to use it

Convert an image to grayscale using a luminance-weighted RGB formula, then save the result as PNG, JPEG or WebP without changing its pixel dimensions.

  1. Choose an image.
  2. Select PNG, JPEG or WebP as the output format.
  3. Run the conversion, inspect the preview and download the result.
Formula
0.2126R + 0.7152G + 0.0722B
Dimensions
Same pixel width and height as the source
Output
PNG / JPEG / WebP
JPEG/WebP quality
Browser export quality 0.9

The conversion is weighted for perceived brightness

Green contributes more strongly than blue because human vision is more sensitive to it. The tool therefore does not use a simple one-third average of R, G and B.

Color information is discarded by this operation and cannot be reconstructed from the grayscale output. Keep the original file separately.

One luminance value replaces all three color channels

For every pixel, the calculated Y value is written into red, green and blue, removing hue while preserving relative brightness.

PNG is a good choice when transparency matters

The alpha channel itself is not changed. PNG or WebP can therefore retain transparency better than JPEG.

JPEG cannot preserve transparency

If your source relies on transparent areas, choosing JPEG changes that capability even though the grayscale math itself leaves alpha untouched.

The tool does not resize the image

The output canvas uses the same width and height as the loaded source image.
