AVIF is worth testing before it is worth standardizing
AVIF can make some photos much smaller than JPEG or WebP, but encoding can be slower and not every upload destination accepts it. One test image tells you more than converting an entire folder on faith.
Quality 80 is not the same across formats
An AVIF quality value and a JPEG quality value are not directly comparable. The codecs work differently, so judge the final image by two things: how it looks and how large the file became.
Three things to check
- Your CMS or destination actually accepts AVIF.
- Faces, fine text and thin lines still look clean at real display size.
- If transparency matters, check the result against the real background.
A sensible workflow
Convert one product photo, compare it with the original JPEG/WebP, and test it on the actual site. If the result is smaller and still looks right, then batch conversion makes sense.
