Dominant / average image color

Calculate an image’s dominant color and average color as HEX values.

Input and settings

How to use it

Extract two quick color summaries from an image: the dominant color and the average color. Dominant means the most common group of similar colors; average means the overall RGB blend.

  1. Choose one image.
  2. Run the tool to see Dominant and Average colors with HEX values.
  3. Select a swatch to copy its HEX code.
Analysis size
Long edge reduced to at most 800 px
Dominant
Most frequent color after coarse RGB quantization
Average
Mean R/G/B of sampled pixels
Transparent pixels
Samples with alpha below 32 are ignored

Dominant and average can tell very different stories

In a photo with a large blue sky, Dominant may be a sky blue while Average shifts toward gray because people, ground and shadows are mixed into the mean.

This is not a brand-color recovery tool. Use it as a quick summary of the image’s overall color character.

Dominant means the largest approximate color cluster

The tool groups nearby RGB values before counting them instead of requiring exact pixel matches. That reduces the effect of tiny photographic variations.

Average is like mixing all sampled colors together

Each sampled red, green and blue value contributes to the arithmetic mean, so large areas of an image have more influence.

Large images are analyzed at a smaller working size

Very large images are reduced proportionally before color analysis so the tool stays responsive. The source file is not changed, but the result should be treated as an approximate visual summary rather than a pixel-perfect census.

Nearly transparent pixels are skipped

Pixels with alpha below 32 are excluded so hidden RGB values in a transparent background do not dominate the result.
