How to use it

Enter file size and transfer speed to estimate how long the transfer will take. It answers questions such as “roughly how long should 10 GB take at 100 Mbps?”

  1. Enter the file size and choose MB, GB or TB.
  2. Enter the connection speed in Mbps.
  3. Select Calculate and read the theoretical seconds plus the approximate minutes and seconds.

10 GB at 100 Mbps is theoretically about 13 min 20 sec

10 GB is about 80,000 megabits. Divide that by 100 megabits per second and the theoretical transfer time is 800 seconds, or about 13 minutes 20 seconds.

Real transfers are slower because of Wi-Fi quality, congestion, protocol overhead and server limits. Treat the result as a best-case reference rather than a promise.

GB and Gb differ by a factor of eight

File sizes are normally expressed in bytes while network speeds are expressed in bits. Multiplying the byte-based size by eight is the key conversion behind the estimate.

The size units here are decimal

The calculator uses 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. That is slightly different from binary GiB, so an operating system’s displayed size may not match the estimate exactly.

A 100 Mbps service does not always deliver 100 Mbps

Plan speed and negotiated link speed are upper bounds. For a practical estimate, enter a speed measured on the same network path you expect to use.

Uploads need the upstream speed

For cloud backups or sending a large file, use the connection’s upload Mbps rather than its download Mbps. The two can be very different on some services.
