JSON and YAML overlap, but they are not identical twins
Both can represent structured data, which makes conversion useful for APIs and config files. But YAML can carry things that do not round-trip neatly through JSON, such as comments and some type interpretations.
A successful conversion can still lose context
If a YAML file contains comments, converting it to JSON and back may not restore them. Values that look like dates or booleans can also be interpreted differently depending on the parser.
Treat important config like code
- Keep the original file.
- Review key names and value types after conversion.
- For production config, compare the before/after structure instead of trusting appearance alone.
Typical use
Convert a YAML configuration to JSON for an API, then verify that the keys and values still mean the same thing before you deploy it.
